Being on the
Cross Country and Track and Field teams, I get to see first hand how easily
people are influenced by the ideas surrounding what you are supposed to be
eating. With our coach drilling into us ideas about protein and carbohydrates,
and having a mandatory meeting with a nutritionist, it is not a surprise that
runners are so focused on what they are eating. Plus on top of those things,
there is increased pressure when you eat most breakfasts, lunches, and dinners
with teammates.
Eating with a group of opinionated runners
all having an idea of what a runner should be eating puts a lot of pressure on eating a certain way. Opting for a salad over a burger and not getting that brownie
you’ve been craving because of the look you got last time. I have found myself
choosing to eat meals with people not on my team so I do not feel this
pressure. When speaking to friends that are are not on the team but will often eat with runner, they explained also finding themselves feeling the pressure to eat healthier when eating with the cross country team then when they do not. The people an individual eats with and the ideas surrounding the food they are
eating can dramatically affect what they choose to put on their plate.
